A Historical Timeline of Murrieta's Well

With an irresistible allure for generations, the history of Murrieta’s Well is as old as California itself.

Joaquin Murrieta discovers the beauty and magic of an artesian well bubbling up from the floor of the Livermore Valley, today the site of our historic winery.

Louis Mel falls in love with the Livermore Valley and buys a 92-acre estate the locals affectionately call “Murrieta’s Well.” Mel is captivated by the unusually gravelly soil linked to some of the great vineyard sites of France. He builds a gravity-flow winery into the hillside and imports cuttings from renowned Chateau d’Yquem and Chateau Margaux and plants them on the property.

Ernest Wente buys the property from friend and neighbor, Louis Mel.

Philip Wente, Ernest’s grandson who grew up a stone’s throw from the winery, forms a partnership with winemaker Sergio Traverso and together they resurrect Murrieta’s Well.

Murrieta’s Well celebrates 20 years of creating Unforgettable Estate Blends from California’s Livermore Valley with the release of new proprietary blends, The Whip and The Spur.
